Harbin Engineering University is located in the “ice city” of Harbin. One of the best shipbuilding universities in China. Has a strong scientific base of national importance in the specialties: shipbuilding, military shipbuilding, development of marine resources and nuclear technology.
The territory of Harbin Engineering University occupies 1 million 220 thousand square meters.
The university has 17 faculties, where they train specialists in 9 postdoctoral specialties, 27 doctoral specialties, 76 master’s degree branches of knowledge entitled to award a master’s degree (including MBA), 51 bachelor’s branches of knowledge.
The university employs 2,600 specialists, including 6 academicians, 700 professors and associate professors. More than 25,000 students study at the university, among them more than 6,500 undergraduates and postgraduates.
The university was founded on September 1, 1953 as the Military Engineering Institute of the People’s Liberation Army of China. In 1966 the institute was renamed the Harbin Engineering Institute.
Today, the scientific and technical achievements of the university have reached international standards, in particular, a system for measuring and tracking the orbit on a spacecraft, a depth gauge, an underwater robot Zhishui Ⅲ, etc.
The university offers a wide range of humanitarian, technical and natural science specialties. For some specialties of bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral studies, it is possible to study in English. All year round, our university accepts foreign students and students for short-term Chinese courses.

HEU is in the TOP 50 of the best key universities in China and in the TOP 200 of the best educational institutions in Asia. The university houses China’s first comprehensive submarine and deep-sea rescue lock simulator. Since 1978, Harbin Institute of Marine Engineering has been recognized by the State Education Commission as one of the 88 leading universities.
The institution is renowned for its major research achievements that fill the gaps in the country. It was chosen as the first in the world to design and develop duplex submersibles, ships and gradient sound meters.
The school has a strong technical reserve in the field of naval and naval nuclear weapons. Underwater robot, ship anti-rental, ship power, integrated navigation, sonar positioning, nuclear power simulation, large-scale ship simulation, and other technologies are underway domestically or internationally. It is a key building block for the development of advanced military technical equipment.
Composition and infrastructure of the university
The university includes 15 colleges, which are located on an area of 1.22 million m2. There are also 2 departments and 1 center: department of foreign languages, department of physical military training, engineering and technical center. There are various specialty and basic laboratories, 126 in total, including 2 national key laboratories, 1 national e-learning base, 1 national e-learning prototype, 11 provincial or ministerial key laboratories.
The full composition of the university:
- 3,050 teachers, of which 395 professors, 510 associate professors and 348 doctoral students, 9 academicians,
- 28,000 full-time and part-time students, of which more than 1,500 are foreigners.
Undergraduate, Graduate and Doctorate programs accept students in the fall semester. Students will attend a variety of proper classes according to their Chinese language levels. There are A, B, C, D, E, F, totally 6 levels of Chinese training courses. Each level is more progressive than the previous one and is a separate unit. In the educational process, teachers not only emphasize the strengthening of communication competence and reading skills, but also contribute to the comprehensive study of the Chinese language of students. Each grade A, B, C has a maximum of 15 students, and each grade D, E and F has a maximum of 20 students.
Admission and tuition fees
Annual tuition fees:
- registration mandatory fee – 400 yuan.
- language program – 7,000 yuan;
- Undergraduate – 13,000 – 16,000 RMB;
- Master’s degree – 30,000 – 36,000 yuan;
- Doctorate – 45,000 yuan.
The institution has 3 national key disciplines – underwater acoustic engineering, design and manufacture of ships and offshore structures, as well as navigation, management and control. In addition, the 7 most important national disciplines – nuclear science and technology, marine engineering, solid mechanics, are valued all over the world.
Grants
Given the fact that HEU is a public institution, students are eligible for financial support from the university, as well as for a scholarship in several variations. Successful international students can apply for an increased presidential scholarship on a par with the indigenous people.

Dormitory
HEU has 16 student apartments, 2 graduate apartments, as well as dedicated international student apartments and doctoral apartments. There is a guest house at Harbin Engineering University. Aviation Apartments, Bayi Hotel and Xincheng Hotel are nearby. There are 2 student canteens and food courts on campus, as well as over ten restaurants and a variety of eateries. The cost of living in HEU: long-term room – 500-600 yuan per month, short-term room – 25 yuan per day. Electricity, gas, water, internet are paid separately (about 20 yuan per week).

Dormitory for international students
Room A (44.7 sq.m.)
The suite consists of a kitchen and two rooms. Each room has a TV, telephone (for calls paid by the resident), dedicated Internet channel (paid by the resident), bathroom / shower (washing machine). In the kitchen: stove, refrigerator. RMB 500 / month / person
Room B (56.5 sq.m.)
The suite consists of a kitchen, living room and two rooms. Each room has a TV, telephone (for calls paid by the resident), a dedicated Internet channel (paid by the resident). In the living room: a large table, chairs. Bathroom / shower (washing machine). In the kitchen: stove, refrigerator. 600 yuan / month / person
When registering at the hostel, an additional deposit of 350 yuan is paid, which is returned upon check out of the hostel if there is a receipt for payment.
During summer and winter holidays (July-August, January-February), the hostel costs 25 RMB / night per person.
Water, gas, electricity, internet are paid additionally.
Food
The university canteens are open daily from 6:30 to 18:30. For the convenience of paying for food, it is recommended to buy plastic cards with a refillable balance. A student, purchasing a card, makes a prepayment in cash; when paying for food at the cash desk of the dining room, a certain amount of the cost of food is removed from the card.
Polyclinic
Opening hours: from 8:00 to 11:30 and from 14:00 to 17:00 on weekdays.
Saturday from 8:00 to 11:30.
For emergencies, there is a night shift. There are departments: dentistry, fluorography, Chinese medicine, therapeutic, dermatology, surgical, ENT, ophthalmology, gynecology, pediatrics, ultrasound, ECG, clinical laboratory.
Sports centers
On the territory of the university there are two indoor sports centers of 8,800 and 3,500 sq.m., including: a swimming pool, table tennis rooms, halls for dancing, aerobics, a field for competitions, badminton, kung fu, tennis court. There are also outdoor track and field stadiums, 5 football fields and 28 basketball courts, 4 tennis courts, 1 handball field, 1 baseball field, 1 croquet field. To use the sports centers and facilities, a certificate from a therapist at the university polyclinic is required.
Given the large length of the university campus, there are regular buses operating on the territory of the university. Cost of one trip: 1 yuan ($ 0.1) per person.
