About the university
Location: Urumqi, China
Xinjiang University, was established in 1924 and is one of the oldest universities in the region. Today, the institute is under the special patronage of the Ministry of Education of the PRC and is one of the so-called “key” educational institutions of the “211” project.
Initially specializing in Russian philology, politics and law, by the 21st century the university has acquired a complex character: here the attention is paid equally to both the humanitarian and technical disciplines. Since 2010, the university has been actively developing exchange programs that allow representatives of both foreign states and national minorities in China to enter the institute.
University ranking and benefits
The university occupies a leading position in Xinjiang and is the most popular among applicants in the western part of the PRC. The most important benefits of a local education include:
- High level of training in technical specialties.
- A large number of exchange programs: today there are partner universities in 30 countries of the world.
- Language courses are accompanied by many applied disciplines: calligraphy, Chinese culture, wushu, etc. There are also separate courses of the Kazakh language.
- The cost of education is low by the standards of universities in the Middle Kingdom.
Since the university is closely connected with the tradition of studying the Russian language, it pays special attention to students from the CIS, including from Kazakhstan. Teachers and local students are interested in cultural exchange and create especially comfortable learning conditions for Russian-speaking youth.
Composition and infrastructure
The total number of university students reaches 30,000, making it the largest educational institution in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Republic. Moreover, about 2% of them are representatives of foreign states. The teaching staff includes more than 1,500 people, including holders of various academic degrees.
The campus contains not only training facilities, but also sports facilities and a unique library. The latter contains, among other things, literature in the languages of the small peoples of China. The library staff includes Uighurs, Uzbeks, Manchus, Kazakhs, Huis, etc.).
Also on the territory of the institute there are 7 research centers, where participants of post-candidate courses can conduct research.
Admission and tuition fees
Applicants who have graduated from high school are allowed to enter the university. Those wishing to study at the undergraduate and higher levels must reach the age of 25 and provide a copy of the document from the previous place of study, a copy of the passport and the results of the Chinese language proficiency test.

Grants
Since the university is a member of the “211” project, applicants from other countries have the opportunity to receive financial support from the Chinese state. Specifically, the PRC Government and Confucius Institute Scholarships are available. Studying programs
Students are prepared at the following levels:
- Short-term language courses – duration from 1 month.
- Long-term language courses – duration 1 semester – 2 years.
- Undergraduate course – duration 4 years.
- Master’s degree – duration 3 years.
- Doctoral studies – duration 3 years.
Various disciplines are taught at the university, which allows it to offer foreign students numerous options for educational programs: 74 for undergraduate, 96 for magistracy and 12 for doctoral studies.
Faculties
Xinjiang University includes 23 independent institutes that are engaged in educational and research activities. Particular attention is paid to the agricultural sector. For example, a specialized center for supporting the development of regions with arid soils has been opened at the institute.
Mechanical engineering and the chemical industry are traditionally strong areas of education. These specialties are among the “core” disciplines and are recognized as particularly important at the national level.
Dormitory
A separate hostel has been opened especially for students from abroad right on the shore of Lake Honhu. All rooms are equipped with their own bathroom, there is also a shared kitchen and laundry. Meals are available at the on-campus multi-ethnic dining room. A recreation room, sports grounds for football, basketball, badminton, table tennis, etc. are open for students’ leisure.
