Beijing University of Chinese Medicine (北京中医药大学)

About the university

Location: Beijing, China

Chinese traditional medical practices are a specialty that can be fully acquainted with only in the Middle Kingdom itself. Anyone wishing to engage in such an unusual practice is professionally recommended to choose the Beijing University of Chinese Medicine for higher education.

The official name of the institute is Beijing University of Chinese Medicine. The university officially occupies one of the leading places in the list of universities in China and makes a great contribution to the development of medical science and the prevention of dangerous diseases. Close attention is paid to the manufacture of traditional natural medicines.

The university opened its doors to Chinese students back in 1956. Since 2000, two fundamentally important areas have been added to the curriculum – osteology and acupuncture.

University ranking and benefits

Currently, the university is included in the list of 200 best educational institutions in all of China. The main advantage of the university is the uniqueness of the material taught. In no other country can students be so clearly explained and demonstrated what the specificity of Chinese healing techniques is. Practical training is also expected, allowing you to see all the manipulations on patients in reality and carry them out on your own. In fact, when you graduate from the University of Chinese Medicine, you acquire a specialty that cannot be learned anywhere else.

A great contribution to raising the rating of the institute is made by its teachers. Today, there are 654 people among them who have a scientific degree. All of them are involved in the training of both bachelors and Chinese students of a higher level (up to doctoral studies).

University composition and infrastructure

The staff and managers of the university strive to make it as developed and modern as possible. Students are encouraged not only to learn a specialty, but also to gain knowledge in different areas, each of which has a separate university department:

  • Acupuncture.
  • Clinical medicine.
  • Scientific medical research.
  • Interaction of Chinese medicine with European medicine.
  • Massage.

This is not a complete list of what those who have chosen this institution for higher education can learn.

Practical activities of students take place on the basis of well-known metropolitan hospitals, inter-university cooperation with such large universities as Tsinghua, Nankai, Beijing Pedagogical University, Foreign Trade and Economic Institute, etc. has been established.

The educational institution also has separate laboratories where practical classes can be held, lecture halls and classrooms equipped according to modern technical standards. We should also mention the library, which contains more than 44,000 books and periodicals. There is also a museum of traditional medicine at the educational institution.

Entrance tests and tuition fees

Admission to the university is available to foreign citizens under the age of 25. Good health is also considered a requirement. The peculiarity of the medical institute is that everyone entering there must have a “guardian”: any adult resident of Beijing who is officially employed can become one. As for exams, all applicants are offered a test for the level of knowledge of the Chinese language.

The amount of payment for the course is directly related to the chosen program. So, for short-term language courses, it is 14,000 yuan per semester (about $ 2300). You will have to pay more for a full-fledged specialized education, the price of a bachelor’s degree will vary from 35,000 yuan to 45,000 yuan (i.e., from $ 6,000 to about $ 7,800) per year. This difference in cost is explained by the fact that the university offers two languages of instruction to choose from: Chinese or English.

Studying programs

Today the institute offers several programs that may be of interest to students from other countries. Among them:

  • Long-term language program: duration – 1 semester or more).
  • Bachelor of Chinese Medicine (language of instruction – Chinese): duration – 5 years.
  • Bachelor of Chinese Medicine (language of instruction – English): duration – 5 years.

The content of the last two programs does not differ, the difference is only in the language of instruction.

The language program is a preliminary stage for those applicants who want to continue their studies in Chinese, but do not know it at a sufficient level. It includes testing, assignment to groups and further study of the language with a focus on professional medical vocabulary.

Faculties

  • Clinical Chinese Medicine.
  • Acupuncture, moxibustion, Chinese massage (Acupuncture, Moxibustion & Tuina).

All programs are available at the undergraduate level and include both the study of the theoretical foundations of subjects and practical activities in real stationary conditions.

In the first case, the cost will be 100 yuan per day (about $ 17), in the second – 50 yuan per day (about $ 9). Moreover, all rooms are not equipped with a shared bathroom.
