About the university

Founded in 1964 at the initiative of the first Premier of the State Council of the People’s Republic of China Zhou Enlai as part of the national program for the development of higher education in the field of foreign languages. Previously, the university was called Beijing Second Foreign Language University, which was given by Zhou Enlai and written down by the first president of the PRC Academy of Sciences, Guo Moruo, at the opening ceremony. He grew up from a subsidiary institute of the Xinhua News Agency into one of the largest universities for the study of foreign languages (as of 31.10.2016, 18 languages) and culture in China. It is currently the leading university in China in the fields of teaching and learning foreign languages, tourism management, hospitality and international trade.
